Old Charter Oak 'Chinkapin Oak' Barrel Aged Bourbon, released in 2020 at 93 proof, is part of Buffalo Trace’s celebrated Old Charter Oak series. This collection explores how different oak varietals influence bourbon over time. The Chinkapin Oak expression draws its name from the rare Quercus muehlenbergii species, native to North America, whose wood was historically prized for its strength and unique aging qualities. The series pays homage to the rich legacy of bourbon maturation and the innovative spirit of Kentucky’s whiskey pioneers. Each bottle in the Old Charter Oak line is distinguished by its unique label and the embossed copper medallion on the neck, highlighting the importance of wood selection in bourbon history. The Chinkapin Oak release quickly became a collector’s favorite, reflecting both the rarity of the oak and the ongoing pursuit of new aging traditions in American whiskey.
