This is one of the many vintage dated “Mellon private bottlings” of Old Overholt brought to auction and sold in 2015 as part of the Richard Mellon Scaife estate.
The whiskey inside is widely thought to have been rebottled in the early 1930s after prohibition ended. New bottles were sourced, labels were recreated and the original (disintegrating) corks were replaced with reliable metal screw caps and sealed with white capsules.
Although the bottles were not marked with age or proof, according to statements and letters from the Mellon family, the whiskey was likely 12-15 years old and the proof has been tested at or near 100 for the bottles that have been opened and enjoyed.
