Early "gold neck" bottling of the Van Winkle Old Time Rye. In addition to the gold foil neck, notice the lack of 12 year age statement on the shoulder, non-letter prefix bottle number and "96" glass molding. Many thought the black neck Old Time Rye 12yr from 1997 was the first bottling but this 1996 release preceded it by a full year. Some other specifics about this bottling:
• The whiskey inside was distilled in 1985 at Medley in Owensboro, Kentucky and is most likely 11 years old.
• It was bottled at 90 proof instead of the later releases at 95.6 or 100.
• The Lawrenceburg marked label indicates this was bottled at Old Commonwealth by Julian Van Winkle III. All rye bottlings prior to mid-2002 were packaged there. Aging and bottling switched to Frankfort after the brand entered a joint venture with Buffalo Trace.
