Pappy Van Winkle 20yr was first released in 1994 by Julian Van Winkle III as a tribute to his grandfather. From 1994 until 2002 all bottlings were done at Old Commonwealth in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Barrels and bottling moved to the Frankfort location after the joint venture with Buffalo Trace was completed in 2002.

There are two primary types of Lawrenceburg Pappy 20's: green glass and clear glass. Green glass bottles came first and were used from 1994 through 1999. Post-1999, clear glass bottles were phased in. Since laser codes weren't used during this time, "eras" are about as close as you can get when it comes to dating.
